Buckhead

Buckhead’s origins lie in the ancestral lands of Cherokee and Creek Indian tribes, later traversed by Andrew Jackson’s military forces. A pivotal moment occurred on December 18 when Henry Irby acquired 202.5 acres in DeKalb County for a mere $650, as chronicled by John Ottley in “Atlanta History for Cocktail Parties.” Despite Irby’s unassuming stature, his imprint on Atlanta’s history was profound.

Irby swiftly erected a tavern and grocery store at what is now the intersection of Peachtree Road and Paces Ferry, establishing the nucleus of Irbyville. Legend has it that Irby displayed a buck’s head, leading to the area being dubbed “the buck’s head” instead. Irby retained ownership until his passing in 1879.

Buckhead’s evolution from seasonal residences to a year-round community saw the subdivision of neighborhoods and the construction of numerous homes. Annexed by Atlanta in 1952, Buckhead underwent significant transformation, with large estates giving way to prestigious commercial developments. Key milestones include Lenox Square (1959), Phipps Plaza, Tower Place (1974), and the flagship Ritz Carlton (1984).

In recent years, the Peachtree Road corridor, known as Buckhead Village, has become a focal point for commercial planners and developers. Boasting premier shopping, dining, and entertainment, Buckhead has earned the moniker “Beverly Hills of Atlanta” for its history, opulent homes, prime location, luxury amenities, and upscale retail options. A residence in Buckhead signifies a coveted address in Atlanta’s most esteemed and affluent enclave.
